What does 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G mean?
1G, 2G, 3G, 4G These terms are familiar to us every day. We are basically drowning in the electromagnetic sea. If we look around, we can see the antennas or cell towers of GP, Robi, Banglalink, Teletalk, and various radio and dish companies. Those who are constantly radiating radio signals. And we’re using them in a variety of technologies. We basically use these terms based on internet data speed, the versatility of the technology.
What do 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G mean?
There is a question in the minds of many, what is meant by “G” in these terms? Here, “G” means generation. We use this term for a generation. If you notice, the behavior of one generation with one generation, there are many differences in behavior. Similarly, there are many differences between 1G, 2G, 3G in terms of technology. Let’s find out the differences.
What is the difference between 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G?
1G
1G is the first step in the mobile cellular system that was invented in 1980. Whose maximum bandwidth was 14.4kb / s? It used circuit switching data. Only audio calls could be made with this 1G network. But no SMS could be sent and the internet could not be used. The systems that 1G networks follow are-
- AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System)
- NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephones)
- TACS (Total Access Communications System)

2G
As we know, technology is changeable. The 1G network was further improved in 1990 and renamed 2G (Second Generation). Its maximum speed was 144 kb / s. One of the great features of 2G was that the network could be used to send voice calls as well as SMS and access the Internet. The systems that 2G networks follow are-
- GSM (2G) / Global System For mobile
- CDMA / Code Division Multiple Access
- TDMA / Time Division Multiple Access
In 2G, a packet data switching system is used instead of circuit data. Due to which GPRS can be used. It can also use EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) technology. Whose bandwidth can be up to 200kb / s?
3G
3G is the 3rd step in the cellular network system. Its maximum speed is 200kb / s – 1 Mb / s. The great feature of this technology is that it allows video conferencing and the data speed is much higher than before. The protocols that 3G networks use are:
- UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), CDMA2000, EDGE
- HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access), shorter Transmission Time Interval (TTI)
- HSPUA (High-Speed Uplink Packet Access)
4G
4G is the Fourth Generation Cellular System. It is the latest technology network. Whose speed is 100MB / s? It has a much higher speed than3G. And because it has a much higher speed than 3G, High-Quality Television can be seen with 4G.
