Detailed discussion of power factor.

A detailed discussion of power factor.

What is the power factor?

A detailed discussion of power factor: The power factor is usually the cosine angle between voltage and current. In other words, the ratio of active power to active power is called the power factor. The power factor is usually expressed by cosθ. It has no unit and is expressed as a percentage.

What is meant by a motor (IP)?

Details

The power factor indicates the percentage of electricity we can use for necessary purposes. Power factor values are up to (0-1).

We know that cosθ expresses the power factor but θ refers to the angle between current and voltage.

Thus the cosine value of the angle between current and voltage is defined as “power factor”.

If the exact calculation of the power factor is not known, it is calculated at the standard value of 80%, i.e. 0.8 lagging. Active power is measured in kilowatts and operative power is measured in volt-amperes (KVA).

  • Active Power (kW) = VIcosθ
  • Apparent power (kVA) = VI
  • Power factor, cosθ = kW / kVA

Types of power factor

There are usually three types of power factors

  1. Lagging power factor.
  2. Leading power factor.
  3. Unity power factor.

What does power factor 1 or 0.6 mean?

Assuming a value of power factor of 1, we understand that 100 kWA of active power can be obtained by supplying 100 kVA. And the value of the power factor (cosθ) is 0.6 which means if we supply 100 kVA we get 60 kW active power.

What is the lagging, leading, and unity power factor?

Current Transformer (C.T) Details.

Lagging Power Factor

The lagging power factor is when the current is behind the voltage or the inductive load is higher than the capacitive load in the AC circuit, it is called the lagging power factor. For example, 80-degree lagging power factor means that it is 60 degrees behind the current-voltage.

Leading power factor

If the capacitive load is more than the inductive load in the AC circuit, that is, if it is ahead of the current-voltage, it is called the leading power factor. For example, a 60-degree leading power factor will be 60 degrees ahead of the current voltage.

Unity Power Factor

When the current and voltage in the circuit are at the same time i.e. the inductive and capacitive loads in the circuit are equal then it is called Unity Power Factor.

What is power factor correction?

Reducing the amount of reactive power in a system and increasing the amount of active power is called power factor correction. Power factor correction and improvement are done using a capacitor bank or synchronous motor. Power factor correction is done using capacitor banks in different industries.

What are the problems in the system when the value of the power factor is low?

Line loss increases.

  1. Cable size is much more required.
  2. Reduces power system efficiency.
  3. Increases initial cost and increases per unit cost

What are the economic power factor and their formula?

The power factor, which means maximum annual savings when improved, is called the economic power factor.
